Diabetes Management
The staff and providers at Northeast ProHealth stress the importance of diabetic prevention and care.In Greater San Antonio, one in three has prediabetes. Prediabetes is defined as a Hemoglobin A1C level of 5.7% to 6.4%. Hemoglobin A1C is a blood test that measures average glucose levels over the past three months.
One in six has Type 2 diabetes, which is determined by a Hemoglobin A1C level of 6.5 or higher. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to use insulin effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels.
Greater San Antonio has a 16% rate of Type 2 diabetes, which is 6% higher than the national average. Hispanics are at greater risk for diabetes due to social, biological, and environmental factors.
Diabetes Management
Diabetes occurs when your blood glucose or blood sugar is too high. Your body’s main source of energy, glucose is produced by your body as well as from the food you eat. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas that acts like a key allowing glucose from your bloodstream to enter your body’s cells for energy. Diabetics do not produce enough insulin, which causes glucose to remain in your blood and not travel into your body’s cells.
Symptoms of diabetes include thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, slow-healing wounds, and frequent infections. If you are symptomatic or uncertain if you have diabetes, please contact Northeast ProHealth to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Diabetes Management
Diabetic care is critical because of the multiple health problems associated with this chronic disease. Diabetes can damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart if not managed properly. Some of the conditions associated with diabetes are sexual dysfunction, kidney disease, kidney failure, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes, vision loss, blindness, neuropathy, and ulcers, infections, and tissue damage to your feet and hands, which can lead to possible amputation if left untreated.
You can control your diabetes, but not without managed care and your commitment to follow the prescribed care. We have patients that have controlled their diabetes by following the medical advice of our providers.
